Chaminda Vaas asks cricket boards to protect Test and one-day cricket alongside T20

Interest in the International Cricket Council has picked up after comments from Chaminda Vaas, the former Sri Lanka left-arm seamer who took more than 750 international wickets across his career. Speaking about how the game is evolving, he argued that while T20 cricket is where the sport is heading commercially, boards should make a deliberate effort to keep Test and 50-over cricket healthy.

His point was that the longer formats came first and built the game's foundations, so they should be preserved rather than squeezed out as franchise T20 leagues expand across more countries and take up more of the calendar. He described T20 as the game of the future while urging administrators not to let the other two formats fade.

The remarks land in a wider conversation about scheduling: players increasingly choose between national duty and league contracts, and boards are weighing how many Tests and one-day internationals they can fit in. Vaas's view adds a former bowler's voice to that debate, without proposing any specific change to the calendar.
