Report: NPCI is preparing to let UPI AutoPay mandates move between apps

Reports suggest an announcement is expected at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai in September. NPCI has not confirmed it publicly.

UPI AutoPay is the standing instruction that quietly debits your bank account for things like subscriptions, insurance premiums, SIPs, and loan EMIs. Right now, a mandate you set up in one UPI app effectively lives in that app. If you want to switch apps, you generally have to cancel the mandate and register it again.

According to a Mint report relayed by MediaNama, NPCI is preparing to change that by making AutoPay interoperable. Users would be able to see eligible mandates across UPI apps and move them without cancelling and recreating them. The same would apply on the merchant side, so a business changing its payment gateway could shift existing mandates rather than asking every customer to sign up again. The report notes the bank account behind a mandate would not change — money would still be debited from the account you originally authorised.

Status matters here. This is reporting based on people familiar with the plan, not an NPCI announcement. The report says the changes are expected to be announced at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai in September 2026. Until NPCI publishes something, timelines and details could shift.
