WhatsApp is rolling out an 'AI content' label for channel updates on Android

WhatsApp is giving channel admins a way to disclose when the images or videos they post were made or edited with an AI tool. Followers see a small 'AI content' tag on the update itself, in the same corner as the timestamp and view count, so no tapping is needed to notice it.

According to WABetaInfo, which spotted the feature, the label applies to media created with any AI tool, not only Meta's own — something generated in another chatbot or image editor falls under the same expectation. The tag is also permanent: once an admin applies it, they cannot take it off, which is deliberate, since it is meant as a disclosure rather than a toggle. WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp may in some cases detect AI-generated media and apply the label automatically.

WhatsApp frames this partly as a compliance tool, noting that admins in some countries are legally required to label AI content. The reporting does not name which countries, so it is not clear whether India is among them. The feature is currently reaching only some testers on the Android beta channel, and WhatsApp has not said when it will be available to everyone.
