Who Am I, really?

Reflections

We change our bodies with time, just like we change clothes every day. In one lifetime, you may dislike a certain food, and in another, it might become your favorite. Today, you might love the beach and avoid the mountains, but in some other life, you might feel the exact opposite. The qualities you don’t like in someone right now might be the same ones you had in a different lifetime, or may have in the future.

So how wise is it to give too much importance to our thoughts, likes, dislikes, beliefs, cravings, and aversions? We often hold on to them so tightly that whenever something challenges them, we get triggered. For example, someone who is always punctual may judge those who come late. But who knows, maybe in some lifetime, they were never on time either. Or they may become like that in the future.

This brings up a deeper question: Can we accept everything and everyone? Can we include every thought, every like and dislike, every craving and aversion? Can we accept people who don’t fit into our way of thinking or preferences? Because it’s possible that we ourselves were once just like them, or may become like them one day.

Life is eternal. It just keeps flowing. Birth and death are like chapters in a book. One chapter ends, another begins. When one book is finished, a new one starts. In this never-ending journey, are our changing thoughts and preferences really so important?

And finally, the most important question: If my thoughts, beliefs, likes, and dislikes keep changing with time, with each body, with each life, then who am I, really? What truly defines me, if everything I keep identifying with keeps changing?

Maybe this is the real question each one of us should be asking.
